Waiting for the Sun to Rise

Waiting for the Sun to Rise is 30″ x 40″ oil on canvas.

I was inspired by a Northern Ute song:

“I am Like a Bear

I hold up my Hands

Waiting for the Sun to Rise
“

This is a painting of a Warrior wearing many feathers, holding a fan and a shield. His face is painted Red and Black

Cowboy's Sweetheart

Cowboy's Sweetheart, 20 x 30, oil on linen

I worked on the faces again. I think this is it. I couldn't decide if I should leave it as a sepia tone painting or if I should layer on some color.

What do you think?

Cowboy's Sweetheart - Work in Progress 2

Cowboy's Sweetheart
, work in progress, day 2.
Today I continued working on the faces and hats of the left and center figure as well as applying the first layer of paint to the left figure's clothing.
When I do an underpainting like this, I start my mixing about 6 values of paint. These are not very precise mixtures. I do this just to make things go faster.

Demo - Top Hat Oil painting

I've done Demos on my Other Blog and I was asked to do one of an American Indian painting.

First I do a drawing on tracing paper that is the same size as the canvas. Then with carbon paper I transfer the image to my canvas

Step 1. In this step I refined my drawing and block in the background color and the red and the blue.

Step 2. After the first layer has dried, I did an underpainting with raw umber to define the lights and darks. I also added some lights to the background

Step 3. Still using the raw umber and white, I put more detail in the face, and feathers. I started painting the hat, the emblem and the starred fabric.

Next: I'll add color to the face and continue adding details

In Disguise

In Disguise is a commissioned painting. It is 36 x 30, oil on canvas. The Plains Indian warrior wears a Wolf Headdress with eagle feathers. His buffalo robe shows a painting of two warriors in battle.

The buffalo robe had many uses. One of them was for a disguise. When a rider was on horse back covered with the robe he resembled a buffalo when seen from a distance.

The wolf headdress served the same purpose. The headdress was often used by scouts to disguise themselves.
