Billy the Kid was one of the most famous outlaws of the American West. According to legend, he killed 21 men, but it is generally believed that he killed between four and nine. He was catapulted into legend in 1881 when New Mexico's governor, Lew Wallace, placed a price on his head.

This painting is a continuation of my 'Top Hat" series. In the 1880's The Powers That Be in the United States Government would invite American Indian leaders to Washington. There they were given gifts such as clothing, flags, hats etc. The recipient would then use these items as they saw fit. This hat is decorated with parts of a flag, an emblem from a helmet, ribbons and feathers

"Nabisco Shredded Wheat presents Straight Arrow, a thrilling new adventure story from the exciting days of the Old West!"  That's how the radio show opened twice a week.

"Straight Arrow was a Western designed for kids. The show was broadcast between 1948 and 1951. Howard Culver played Steve Adams in the series. Steve was a ranch owner who really was a Comanche Indian named "Straight Arrow". He wore his Indian garb and rode a palomino horse named "Fury" while he fought outlaws."

This Straight Arrow board game was manufactured by Selchow & Righter co. in 1950. Included in the painting is a spinner from the game, a wooden Tomahawk and a feathered headdress.

The American Indian girl wears a striped shawl. An eagle feather adorns her hair.

This Plains Indian wears eagle feathers in his hair to show the many honors he has won. His buckskin shirt is beaded and is painted as a Ghost Shirt would be painted.

He carries a shield and is draped with a trade blanket. The stripe on his face represents tears for the fallen warrior.

This Plains Indian woman wears a striped shawl (Trade Blanket).

Trade blankets have long been an integral part of Native American culture. They're used for clothing, bedding, warmth, ceremonial dances and gifts for important occasions.

 The original Indian trade blankets were the multi-striped point blankets imported by the Hudson's Bay Company from English woolen mills. Trade blankets were among the earliest items of exchange between American Indians and Europeans fur traders in the 1700's. From 1780 to 1890 the blanket was a staple in every fur trader's inventory and thousands upon thousands found their way into indigenous hands.

This painting shows a young Cowboy out for his first ride on a Carousel Horse. This image was inspired by a vintage sepia tone photograph. The colors are glazed on to emulate a hand colored photo.
