It's been a while since I've painted a Plains Indian Shield. It's long past due.

This shield shows a bear, red trade cloth, flicker feathers, eagle feathers and bells. The Plains Indian has his face painted white with red dots.

In Olden Days, American Indians would record events in pictographs. These could be paintings on cave walls, robes, ledgers, tipis or shields.

The events would be legends or stories or personal accounts. When the painting told a story of a man own feats the pictograph would recall the Power that helped the man in a particular circumstance and ask that all who heard his story be blessed similarly by the Power.

This Plains Indian  holds a shield telling of a horse raid.

Eagle feathers are worn in the hair of this American Indian. His face is painted white and red, he wears a Trade Blanket and a beaded shirt.

This Plains Indian carries a shield with the symbols of hail and lightning. These symbols were meant to protect the shield bearer from the forces of nature and prayer for hail  and lightning to fall on the warrior's enemy.

His hair is adorned with eagle feathers. His face is painted red, white and blue

When the Bear Have Gone

 

When the Bear Have Gone, 30 x 30, oil on linen 

The shields of the Plains Indians are prized  more for their Spiritual Protection than for their ability to fend off wounds from weapons. Each shield is painted and adorned to give the bearer a certain power.

This shield represents the Thunder Being. The Thunder Beings are spirits or perhaps extraterrestrial visitors that harbor in the Spring season bringing new growth and abundance but can also bring lightning and destructive storms.

The designs on this shield are to protect the owner but to send harm (hail and lightning) to the enemy.

This American Indian wears a hair style that is associated with the Assiniboin Indian. He holds a shield and has a coup mark painted on his face which indicates that he has gotten close enough to touch an enemy in battle. This is considered braver than killing from a distance.
