Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's Hand in a two-pair poker hand. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits. There is still debate about what the 5th card was.

Otter Breastplates were worn by the Plains Indians and were commonly decorated with Trade Mirrors
Fur traders introduced Trade Mirrors to the American Indians in the 17th century. Reflective surfaces were thought to have mystical powers and these mirrors were quickly adopted for use as decorative additions to warbonnets, otter breastplates and bustles, as well as for signaling mirrors.

When the Bears Have Gone

The shields of the Plains Indians are prized  more for their Spiritual Protection than for their ability to fend off wounds from weapons. Each shield is painted and adorned to give the bearer a certain power.

This shield represents the Thunder Being. The Thunder Beings are spirits or perhaps extraterrestrial visitors that harbor in the Spring season bringing new growth and abundance but can also bring lightning and destructive storms.

The designs on this shield are to protect the owner but to send harm (hail and lightning) to the enemy.

Destiny by K Henderson

This Plains Indian is wearing a scarf slide made of German Silver.  When fur traders first made contact with  American Indians they traded small items in exchange for furs. Silver objects were one of the items that were popular

Eventually, items were made expressly for the purpose of trading. Around the mid 19th century these items were made from "German Silver",  an inexpensive silver-white alloy containing copper and zinc and nickel.

Chief Charlot American Indian

Chief Charlot, also know as Charlo, Claw of the Little Grizzly, was head chief of the Bitterroot Salish from 1870 to 1910. Here he wears a top hat and frock coat. His face is painted white.

This painting is inspired by a photo taken by Edward H Boos in 1907.
