Saturday Matinee

Saturday Matinee, 24″ x 20″ oil on canvas

Remember when movies cost a dime and the cowboy serials were all the rage? Ok, neither do I. But this painting Saturday Matinee brings those time back with a  Tom Mix poster, our favorite cowboy, Howdy Doody, a cowgirl sweetheart, American Indian, a horse and a six shooter. What more do you need?

Aces and Eights by K Henderson

Aces and Eights, 12 x 9, oil on board
Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's Hand in a two-pair poker hand. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits. There is still debate about what the 5th card was.

On the Fringe by K Henderson

On the Fringe, oil on linen, 40 x 30

This Cowgirl oil painting is my most recent in my Silver Screen Cowgirl series. Don't you love those crazy fringed cowhide cuffs? I can't get enough of the retro cowgirl style.

I love Western Movies especially those with Classy Cowgirls. The sepia tone brings back the feeling of the Saturday Matinee western serial.

Destiny by K Henderson

Destiny, 36 x 30, oil on linen
This Plains Indian is wearing a scarf slide made of German Silver.  When fur traders first made contact with  American Indians they traded small items in exchange for furs. Silver objects were one of the items that were popular

Eventually, items were made expressly for the purpose of trading. Around the mid 19th century these items were made from "German Silver",  an inexpensive silver-white alloy containing copper and zinc and nickel.

Redwing - American Indian Still life

Redwing is 30 x 24, oil on canvas.

This painting shows a mixture of old and newer icons of the American Indian. There is pottery, corn, beads, blanket, a kachina as well as a turn of the century piece of sheet music "Redwing".

This painting was awarded second place at the Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande in Ruidoso, NM.

My favorite bit in this painting is the transparent tape holding the sheet music to the wall
