Bear Shield Talisman by K Henderson

Bear Shield Talisman, 12 x 9, oil on canvas

The Plains Indians would have personal talismans that they could wear as hair ornaments, clothing adornments or hang from their shields, horses, doorways etc.

This painting shows a beaded crystal attached to a shield painted with an image of a bear. This would give the owner the strength and power of The Bear

Assiniboine Amulet by K Henderson

Assiniboine Amulet, 8 x 10, oil on canvas

Small leather medicine pouches or amulets were made by the Plains Indians and worn around the neck or attached to clothing or shields. These bags could be plain or decorated with beads, shells etc. It's what was inside the bag that was most important. These small bags would contain protection, luck, and healing power. Stones, feathers, metal, animals claws or teeth, and herbs may be placed in these bags. Each was personal to its owner and would contain items that were significant to the individual.

Aces and Eights by K Henderson

Aces and Eights, 12 x 9, oil on board
Aces and Eights is known as the Dead Man's Hand in a two-pair poker hand. The hand gets its name from the legend of it being the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder (August 2, 1876). It is accepted that the hand included the aces and eights of both the black suits. There is still debate about what the 5th card was.

Forever Brave by K Henderson

Forever Brave, 12" x 9", Oil on board

This little guy is one of my favorite vintage ceramic figures . He’s a little warrior with a tomahawk.

He is standing in front of a wool blanket. Can you tell that I love the color Red?

As I’ve said before, I love painting the different textures. The roughness of the wool, the shiny hardest of the ceramic and the satin reflections on the table all come together to make a nice contrast.

Cowboy Still Life by K Henderson

Cowboy Still Life, 36 x 36, oil on canvas

I love anything Cowboy. I guess it comes from growing up in an era of early television when all the best TV shows were westerns.

Spurs, guns, boots and a little indian pottery for diversity. What more could you want?

Forgotten Thoughts by K henderson

Forgotten Thoughts, 16 x 20, oil on linen

The hand on his face represents a battle honor. It is a Coup mark which indicates that he has gotten close enough to touch an enemy in battle. This is considered braver than killing from a distance.
