Redwing - American indian Still life

Redwing is 30 x 24, oil on canvas.
This painting shows a mixture of old and newer icons of the American Indian. There is pottery, corn, beads, blanket, a kachina as well as a turn of the century piece of sheet music "Redwing".

This painting was awarded second place at the Hubbard Museum's Biennale Grande in Ruidoso, NM.

My favorite bit in this painting is the transparent tape holding the sheet music to the wall

In the Old Days pigments were made from vegetation, stones, soil and animal parts. These things were dried, ground and then mixed with with a binder (water, fat, saliva) to apply to the face and body.

This Plains Indian wears a headdress of feathers, bells, trade cloth, ermine tails and beads. His face is painted blue which is a sacred color in some tribes.

Sacred Spirit - American Indian

Sacred Spirit, 30 x 30 , oil on canvas
This Plains Indian wears a headdress of feathers, trade cloth and beads. His face is painted blue which is a sacred color in some tribes. The hand on his face represents a battle honor. It is a Coup mark which indicates that he has gotten close enough to touch an enemy in battle. This is considered braver than killing from a distance.

This Plains Indian wears a headdress of feathers, beads, ermine tails and a bird. I left the headdress partially out of focus to make the painted face the focal point of the painting.

This painting was inspired by a photo taken by Edward R. Curtis.

The Pale of Truth

The young Plains Indian wears a 'War Shirt' decorated with blue paint, red trade cloth with porcupine quills and hair tassels wrapped in leather. He has eagle feathers in his hair and his face is painted with white clay.

I had a request from one of my galleries to create a large painting. This is the results.

It was common for hair locks to be attached to 'War Shirts'of the Plains Indians. The hair may be that of a family member, taken in battle from an enemy or be animal hair. Whatever the case, it is a symbol of personal honor

Greeley Stampede Western Art Invitational

Tonight was the opening of the Western Art Invitational. I wish I could have been there. The show continues through July 4th.

The Art Show, located in the Event Center lobby in Greeley, CO, is open every day of the Greeley Stampede Rodeo, and is free to the public.
