During the Cheyenne Sun Dance the Sacred Woman is painted 4 different ways during the ceremony. This is the First Paint. The white paint is a prayer that she may live to an old age, the time of white hair. The black line represents the straight road that leads to The Supreme Being.

The Return of the Buffalo - Ghost Dress

The Return of the Buffalo, oil painting on canvas, 30 x 40. 

The dress is an Arapaho Ghost Dress that would have been worn in the Ghost Dance. It was said that performing the Ghost Dance would peacefully end the dominance of the white Man and return abundance to the land, including the return of the Buffalo.
The Thunderbird and New Moon symbolize the beginning of a new life. The woman dressed in red holding the Sacred Pipe and a branch from the holy cedar tree, represents adherence to the tribal culture. The Morning star in day and night are above her left and right. The stars are symbols of the universe being called upon to help them

I did a commission of a young American Indian woman earlier this year and felt a need to paint another. And I wanted to keep it simple yet interesting.

This young woman wears a striped shawl and a red scarf and captures you with here gaze and slight smile.

I used this model several years ago for a painting. A collector saw the painting but missed out on purchasing it. The beautiful model made enough of an impact that the image stayed in his mind. I was recently commissioned to create this painting using the same young American Indian woman.
