Coca Cola Cowboy~Oil Painting by K Henderson

Coca Cola Cowboy, 30 x 30, oil on linen
With that title, of course it has to have a Coke Bottle in the painting. I've had this bottle for some time now and finally got to use it in a painting. Wow! Definitely more complicated than I expected but I'll be painting it again.

Horse Spirit~Oil Painting by K Henderson

Horse Spirit, 36 x 36, oil on linen

In Olden Days, American Indians would record events in pictographs. These could be paintings on cave walls, robes, ledgers, tipis or shields.

The events would be legends or stories or personal accounts. When the painting told a story of a man's own feats the pictograph would recall the Power that helped the man in a particular circumstance and ask that all who heard his story be blessed similarly by the Power.

This Plains Indian  holds a shield telling of a horse raid.

Time for a Change~Join me in my Journey.

Thanks to all that have followed my art for the past 30 years. I appreciate each and every one of you. And while I will continue to post my American Indian and Western Art Paintings it's time to expand my blog. I hope you will continue to follow my blog as I include new painting subject matter as well as other things that I am involved in.
Life in a small rural community is a God given blessing to me and my husband. I am spending more time out of the studio and more time enjoying life around me.
Please join me in my journey.

Rattle Snake

I went out this afternoon to check my bird feeders as I usually do. While at the feeders I heard kind of a buzzing noise. "Cicada" thought I. As I pivoted around a movement on the ground caught my eye. This guy was 6" from my leg, coiled and pulling his head back in the strike position (of course he had a head at the time).
I took a few steps toward the house, calmly put down the bird feeders I was holding, called my dog who was out with me and then ran into the house screaming "RATTLESNAKE!" at which time my brave hunter Hubby came out and blew the head off of the Serpent.
Note to self: Wear boots when you go out.

Fears Nothing~Oil Painting by K Henderson

Fears Nothing, 20 x 30, oil on linen

This painting shows a Plains Indian with a black hand (coup mark) painted on his face. This is a sign of Bravery. To be first to touch the enemy was regarded as the bravest deed of all, it was even a point of bravado for a single warrior to rush in among the enemy and strike one with quirt, coup stick or gun before attempting to fire, thus risking his own life.

On the Fringe~Giclee Print by K Henderson

On the Fringe, oil on linen, 40 x 30

This Cowgirl oil painting is my most recent in my Silver Screen Cowgirl series. Don't you love those crazy fringed cowhide cuffs? I can't get enough of the retro cowgirl style.

I love Western Movies especially those with Classy Cowgirls. The sepia tone brings back the feeling of the Saturday Matinee western serial.

Buckaroo Oil Painting by K Henderson

Buckaroo, 40 x 20, oil on linen

In the not too distant past, before computers and big screen TV's we had small black and white televisions (or so I've been told). In the afternoons we watched The Lone Ranger, Zorro, Roy Rogers and a number of other Western Icons.

And of course we wanted to grow up to be just like our Western Heroes. The first thing we needed was a cool outfit complete with hat and a pair of Six Shooters.

This Buckaroo is wearing all the right stuff for an afternoon of fighting the bad guys.

Sings to the Buffalo~Oil Painting by K Henderson

Sings to the Buffalo, 36 x 24, oil on linen

According to tradition some people were gifted by spirit helpers to use a special song to lure buffalo into a  buffalo pound  which was a huge corral with walls covered by the leaves of thick bushes. As he sang, he used a drum. The song enticed the lead buffalo cow to bring her herd into the enclosure.

This painting is inspired by a 1880's photograph of a Cree Indian who was said to have this gift.
