August 2009 Newsletter

 Greetings. It's hard to believe that its August already. My tomatoes in the greenhouse are turning red faster than we can eat them. And it seems that I spend half my time filling the hummingbird feeders. We have hundreds of Broadtail and Calliope hummers this year.
   
Breckenridge 18th Annual Juried Competition & Show.
  August 25 through September 26

This is a national juried show and I will have 2 paintings exhibited including my still life I've just Got to be a Cowgirl
The show is held at the Breckenridge Fine Art Center in Breckenridge, TX
 

Indian Market Santa Fe

This will be my biggest showing at Indian Market. I will have over a dozen new paintings at The Gallery at 822 Canyon Road. Get a sneek peek at my paintings on my Blog I will be adding new images over the next few weeks

What is the meaning of the face paint in my American Indian paintings?

American Indians painted their faces for decorative purposes and for protection against the wind, sun, snow and insects. Designs of various kinds were used to designate membership in certain societies, to prepare for ceremonies, to mark achievement and to mourn the dead. When used for personal ornamentation there was no guide to the way the paint should be applied beyond the fancy of the wearer or for personal identification.

Rabbit Bowl and Peppers - Indian Market

Pots and Peppers, 30" x 30", oil on canvas. This will be one of my paintings that will be at Gallery 822 during Indian Market weekend in Santa Fe.
Indian Market takes place Aug 21 - 23. It's one of the few shows that I actually attend. Hope to see you there

Courage and Honor - American Indian

Courage and Honor is an oil painting on canvas, 20" x 30".
This Plains Indian  with his face painted in red, white and black, is wearing a hair ornament made of beads , feather and a thimble.  The American Indians would use metal object such as thimbles, mirrors and brass cartridges for ornamentation.
This painting can be purcahse from K. Henderson Studio for a few days. After that, it will be one of my paintings that will be for sale at Gallery 822 in Santa Fe.

Moves Like the Wind - American Indian

Moves Like the Wind is oil on linen, 30" x 30". It depicts a Plains Indian holding a shield and a eagle dance wand. His face is painted Red and white.

Bear Talisman - Oil painting

I have a show coming up in about a month at Gallery 822 in Santa Fe, NM. I'm trying to get 8 new paintings done for the show. 

Here's my first one. Bear Talisman is oil on canvas, 40" x 30".The painting is a plains Indian wearing eagle feathers and a beaded shirt He hold a shield on which is painted a bear. There is also a beaded talisman with a bear claw. The talisman is said to give the shield bearer the attributes of The Bear : Strength and Courage

The Amulet

The Amulet is one of my large paintings, 36 x 36. It's oil on linen.
This painting was interesting for me because it differs from my normal Warriors in a few ways. The most obvious is that the subject is not 'looking' at the viewer. His eyes are down cast.
There are large blocks of geometric shaped color. This is intended so your focus is on the face and beaded amulet.
I also used a limited palette of black, white and raw sienna accented with red, blue and a touch of yellow.

Circle of Life - oil painting

Circle of Life is 40" x 30", oil on canvas.
This painting is different that my current work in that is shows a full figure. The American Indian is holding a sheild representing the Circle of Life. He wears a striped scarf, a blanket and beaded Moccasins.

Question: Do you have people sit for your or do you paint from photos? And is the clothing original on your portraits or from your imagination?

All of the above! I work from photos that I have taken. My goal is NOT to paint a portrait of my model but to use the face, the lighting, the expression as a starting point. I exaggerate features and combine different faces. What I'm painting is an expession or feeling not a specific person.

The same with the clothing. I have hundreds of books on the American Indian so I do research to find the clothing I want or I attend Pow Wows and take photos. I usually don't reproduce any of them exactly as I find them.

The Watchful Heart - American Indian Oil painting

The Watchful Heart is oil on canvas, 20" x 30".
The Warrior stands against the background of the Grasslands of the plains.  He is painted with white clay and black and red accents.
The American Indians painted themselves for ceremonial reasons, personal recognition or protection from the sun.

I Listen and Watch - oil painting

I Listen and Watch is one of my smaller Warrior paintings. It is 24" x 20" , oil on canvas.
The shield has red and blue paint representing the Earth and Sky. The symbols in the center are Deer tracks.
The red stripe on the face represents tears for the fallen.
This painting will soon be available at Mountain Trails Gallery in Park City, UT
