Buffalo Rider by K Henderson

Buffalo Rider, 14" x 11", oil on linen

I've painted a series of 1880's Cowboys. This Cowboy wears the hat, vest, scarf and scarf slide typical of that time in the American West.

This painting will be available at the  Bosque Art Classic in Clifton TX

The Bosque Art Classic is an annual judged & juried art show & sale hosted by the BAC Art Council.  Over the years, it has become a national show which includes entries from international artists as well.  The show is currently in its 30th year.

Sacred Spirit - American Indian

Sacred Spirit, 30 x 30 , oil on canvas

This Plains Indian wears a headdress of feathers, trade cloth and beads. His face is painted blue which is a sacred color in some tribes. The hand on his face represents a battle honor. It is a Coup mark which indicates that he has gotten close enough to touch an enemy in battle. This is considered braver than killing from a distance.

When the Bear Have Gone

When the Bear Have Gone, 30 x 30, oil on linen

The shields of the Plains Indians are prized  more for their Spiritual Protection than for their ability to fend off wounds from weapons. Each shield is painted and adorned to give the bearer a certain power.

This shield represents the Thunder Being. The Thunder Beings are spirits or perhaps extraterrestrial visitors that harbor in the Spring season bringing new growth and abundance but can also bring lightning and destructive storms.

The designs on this shield are to protect the owner but to send harm (hail and lightning) to the enemy.

Flames of Many Colors by K Henderson

Flames of Many Colors, 24 x 30, oil on linen

I had an urge to depart from my usual neutral colored background. Yep, this is colorful.

The title comes from a Quote from Black Elk Speaks, by John G. Neihardt

"And as he spoke of understanding, I looked up and saw the rainbow leap with flames of many colors over me."

The American Indian girl wears a striped shawl. An eagle feather adorns her hair.
